Iowa Fuel Tax Information
Iowa Fuel Tax Rate Changes Effective July 1, 2018
The Iowa fuel tax rates for gasoline will change on July 1, 2018. Iowa fuel tax rates are based on a fuel distribution percentage formula. Applying that formula resulted in the changes. All other Iowa fuel tax rates will remain the same. All rates and effective dates are available under the Iowa Fuel Tax Rates and Descriptions.
Income Tax Credits and Sales/Use Tax Refunds for Use, Sale, and Production of Fuel
Income tax credits have been instituted in recent years that relate to the use, sale, and production of fuel; however, these credits do not impact fuel tax. A sales/use tax refund is also available for producers of biodiesel. To access forms and information regarding these credits and refunds, go to our income or sales tax forms page or view this summary (pdf).

In 2013, the Iowa legislature enacted House File 640 to protect the rights of distributors and dealers to blend fuel. The law prohibits oil refiner’s supply agreements from limiting the ability of distributors and dealers to offer the ethanol and biodiesel blends of their choice.
